Client: Hug in a Bag (www.huginabag.com)
Project: Logo and identity design, illustration, calendar and family organiser

Our director has been a supporter of the Hug in a Bag cancer charity from when it started in October 2006 in Sunderland. Its aim is to give a 'hug' in the form of a pamper bag containing gifts and information to every person diagnosed with breast cancer in hospitals in Sunderland and Blackpool.

The design challenge was to create a universally warm and friendly identity based on the charity's mascot, a bear named 'Hugo', that could operate in conjunction with the original Hug in a Bag identity. The design strategy was to incorporate bold, funny and eye-catching elements but in a thoughtful and controlled manner (however nobody mentioned cute - that was a happy accident!). It was essential that the design have a dynamic and colourful look that would appeal to all ages and combine a feel-good factor with the encouragement of donor involvement. Designed as part of a complete brand identity, response to each application has been overwhelmingly positive, with the first production run of calendar selling out almost immediately. We continue to remain a valued partner in the organisation's many campaign objectives.

We were asked to create a mural to adorn the entrance to the Austin and Pickersgill Slipway Centre. As the building was named in tribute to the Austin and Pickersgill Shipyard that occupied the site from 1826 to 1988, we focused on using a bold and eye-catching mono design that had a centrepiece of a ship’s hull divided into two halves: one side representing the site’s shipbuilding heritage and location on the river and the other representing the advances in technology that occupy the site today.
